When and Where
The Canton Fair is held twice yearly in Guangzhou: Phase 1 (April 15-19 & October 15-19) covers electronics, machinery, and some fireworks-related products. Most fireworks manufacturers exhibit at the Liuyang Fireworks Festival (held in Liuyang, Hunan) rather than Canton Fair itself — but many have representatives or agents at the Fair. The critical pre-Fair period is January-February (for April Fair) and July-August (for October Fair) — this is when you should be reaching out to schedule meetings.
Before You Go: The 4-Week Prep Plan
Week 1: Research exhibitors. Download the Canton Fair app. Search for "fireworks" and "pyrotechnics" exhibitors. Build a target list of 15-20 manufacturers.
Week 2: Send meeting requests. Email each manufacturer with your market, annual volume, and product interests. Request a specific meeting time.
Week 3: Prepare your spec sheet. Document exactly what you want: product types, calibers, shot counts, target price points, packaging requirements, certification needs (CE/DOT/EAC).
Week 4: Book travel and accommodation near the Pazhou Complex. Pack: business cards (100+), spec sheets, a phone with WeChat installed, comfortable shoes.
At the Fair: What to Ask
When you sit down with a fireworks manufacturer, skip the small talk. Ask these questions:
1. "Can I see your Safety Production License?" — verify on the spot
2. "Where is your factory?" — Liuyang is the gold standard
3. "What markets do you primarily export to?" — look for experience in your region
4. "What is your annual production capacity?" — matches your volume needs
5. "Can you develop exclusive formulas?" — separates OEM manufacturers from traders
6. "How many containers did you ship last year?" — track record, not promises
7. "Can I visit your factory this week?" — the best suppliers will say yes immediately
After the Fair: The 48-Hour Rule
Within 48 hours of meeting a manufacturer: send a follow-up WeChat message referencing your conversation, request samples of your top 3-5 product interests, schedule a factory visit if they are within travel distance, and compare notes across all manufacturers you met. The manufacturers who reply fastest with detailed answers are the ones who will be most responsive when you have a real order.
